Before he ever played an NBA game, LeBron James was at a level of fame most athletes never reach.

As a prodigy at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, James was a national phenomenon whose games were televised nationally, and companies were already following him everywhere. It was unprecedented hype for a teenager, with many already touting him as the next face of the league. This led corporate executives and businessmen alike to recognize his potential as a future face of the sport.

But despite the fame, that level of pressure and security could have easily destroyed his career before he was even drafted. After all, history has seen many young athletes have their careers derailed by the overwhelming fame and money they receive at a young age.

James still managed to stay focused amid all the chaos during his come-up. And according to iconic marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro, much of the credit belonged to his mother, Gloria James.

“I told her before it started, ‘Gloria, they are going to be flying into Akron in parachutes. In other words, everyone was going to be coming to get their piece,” he said. “She shielded him.”

“You want to know why he’s stayed focused and avoided some of the pitfalls that got some of the others? It was Gloria,” Vaccaro added.

The King’s shield

LeBron’s upbringing has been well documented over the years, with Gloria raising him on her own amid financial struggles that forced them to move from apartment to apartment, shielding him from straying from his basketball path.

But despite those hardships, Gloria created a fiercely protective environment around her son once the spotlight shone on him and his generational talent. That protection proved crucial as LeBron’s fame continued to grow after he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003.

Still, corporations still wanted a piece of James, and Reebok even offered him a a $10 million check to sign for them while he was still in high school. After everything he had gone through during his childhood, one would think James would have swooped at the chance at the first instance, yet he turned them away, opting to sign with Nike instead on the eve of the NBA lottery in 2003 to a more lucrative seven-year, $90 million contract.

It was just one of the corporate deals offered to James, with one even coming from Vaccaro, an Adidas executive at the time, that offered $60 million less. Despite it all, LeBron already had his signature business-savvy today, but more remarkably, still had immense focus on building his own basketball legacy to give back to his mother.

Clean image

Given the pressure and scrutiny he faced throughout his career, James’ public image remains clean. For more than two decades, he has existed under the brightest spotlights, with every move he made being analyzed relentlessly.

But despite it all, he has avoided any major scandals that have derailed international sports icons. And it’s all because of the foundation that Gloria built during his childhood. It prepared him for the realities of global fame and allowed him to face everything head-on as he became one of the greatest players to ever play the sport.
