Last week, I shared the results of my front office survey on the players and prospects who executives think are most likely to be traded this month. This week, with the All-Star break almost here, let’s drill down more on some of the names and teams that were mentioned in the survey — and some that weren’t.
With the All-Star break around the corner, I asked subscribers for trade questions on their favorite teams. Thanks to all who submitted.
Here are my answers to 25 of your trade deadline questions, starting with the team with the best record in baseball, the Detroit Tigers.
1. As a Tigers fan, I can’t complain about how well this season is going. However, the bullpen, especially the back end, seems like it needs someone who can generate swing-and-miss. Who do you see as the most likely targets? — Joe U.
Aroldis Chapman of the Red Sox, David Bednar of the Pirates, Félix Bautista of the Orioles, Mason Miller of the Athletics, Ryan Helsley of the Cardinals and Emmanuel Clase of the Guardians should be among their top trade targets, with Chapman and Bednar being the most realistic acquisitions.
2. With young players like Nick Kurtz, Tyler Soderstrom and now Colby Thomas vying for everyday spots in the A’s lineup, is there any chance the Tigers could pry Brent Rooker away from the Athletics? — David F.
My intel from the Athletics’ front office is that they have no interest in trading Rooker, whom they signed to a long-term extension before the season. But, for what it’s worth, I do believe his power bat would be a solid fit in Detroit.
3. How willing do you think the Cubs will be to trade prospects Owen Caissie or Kevin Alcántara this deadline with Kyle Tucker an impending free agent and Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki (out of contract after) next season? — Andrew K.
I get the impression the Cubs are “all-in” to win this year and will trade Caissie or Alcántara if that lands them the right pitcher(s). Caissie’s name in particular has come up a lot in my conversations and texts with front office execs in both leagues.
4. What starting pitcher should the Cubs target? — R.K.
Mitch Keller of the Pirates, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly of the Diamondbacks and Edward Cabrera and Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins make the most sense.
5. What kind of return do you think the Phillies could get for Mick Abel? Do you think they should consider trading him? — Michael M.
The only way the Phillies should trade Abel is if they can acquire what they believe is the missing piece to winning a world championship this year. In other words, for example, if they could pry both Emmanuel Clase and Steven Kwan from the Guardians and Abel had to be part of the package to get the trade done, then it would make sense to deal him.
6. What is a reasonable return for Ryan Helsley? In general, and specifically to the Phillies? — Ralph K.
Helsley has a 3.30 ERA, a 3.79 FIP and 17 saves in 22 opportunities this season. He’s in his free-agent walk year and the Cardinals are still within striking distance. A reasonable return in a trade with the Phillies could be second baseman Aroon Escobar and outfielder Griffin Burkholder. MLB Pipeline ranks Escobar and Burkholder sixth and ninth, respectively, in the Phillies’ system.
7. Trade proposal: Pirates trade RHP David Bednar and RHP Dennis Santana to the Phillies for OF Justin Crawford. Who says no? — Matthew D.
I think the Phillies say no. Crawford, 21, is slashing .340/.413/.447 in Triple A and is an elite defensive center fielder. The Phillies shouldn’t give up on him yet. I like Bednar and Santana and think they should pursue a deal for both, but that’s a steep price for just a year and half of two relievers. (Both will be free agents after the 2026 season.) The Phillies should be able to get them for a lesser prospect package.

8. I’d love to see the Mets go after Mitch Keller. Considering he’s under long-term control (signed through 2028), what does a package built around outfield prospect Drew Gilbert look like? Could infielder Ronny Mauricio, Gilbert and a low-level prospect get (the Mets) Keller and David Bednar? — Josh M.
I think Mauricio and first baseman Ryan Clifford would be equal value for Keller, and that’s a trade both sides should make. I like Clifford’s future bat over Gilbert’s, and the Pirates should get two young bats for Keller.
9. Who do you think is the best young major-league-ready position player the Pirates could get in exchange for Keller? — Jacob G.
I’ll go with Owen Caissie of the Cubs.
10. With the Braves needing help in several areas and their minor-league system barren of young talent, what do you think they could net in dealing Chris Sale at the deadline? (With Sale’s injury, he’s not going to be able to help the Braves get to the postseason but should be healed for a late-season run and postseason stretch for a contender.) He also has (a 2026 team option), which should make the return juicier. What say you? — Thomas P.
I think the Braves just need to get their starting pitching healthy for next year and only require a slight reboot at the deadline rather than a transformation. Trading catcher Sean Murphy to open the door full-time for Drake Baldwin makes sense to me, as does dealing soon-to-be free agent Marcell Ozuna. The Braves are going to need Sale next year, so I wouldn’t trade him. Of course, the Braves would have to at least listen to offers — in case someone wants to overpay.
11. How aggressive should the Braves be in selling off top players at the deadline? — Trent W.
I don’t believe the Braves need to be aggressive. However, finding a long-term solution at shortstop and acquiring more young pitching should be the goal.
12. Trade proposal: Dodgers trade Bobby Miller or James Outman to the Cardinals for Nolan Arenado. — Eric L.
The Dodgers say no because they’re not taking on Arenado’s contract at this point in his career and they’re happy with Max Muncy, who is on the injured list but expected to return from his bone bruise well before the end of the regular season.
13. What about Andrew Abbott for Andy Pages? The Reds need hitting and the Dodgers need pitching. Both have similar team control and it seems to fit on paper? — Michael W.
That’s a creative trade proposal. But Abbott has been one of the best left-handed starters in the National League, and the Reds shouldn’t trade him for a bat. They need to find offense without hurting their strong starting pitching staff. However, Pages, who has one more year of team control than Abbott, should have been an All-Star and this trade proposal is fair for both sides. But when it’s close, I side with starting pitching because of the scarcity.
14. The Blue Jays are in desperate need of a fifth starter to get them through the season and stop overtaxing the bullpen. Who could they realistically target? — Shawn C.
The Blue Jays’ front office has made it clear to opposing GMs that starting pitching is their priority at the trade deadline and they are kicking the tires on all the starters that could get moved this July. I particularly like the fit of Merrill Kelly, Mitch Keller or Jeffrey Springs with Toronto.
15. I would love for the Blue Jays to have an outstanding leadoff batter who gets on base, has sneaky power, plays outstanding defense and would be controllable for multiple years. Steven Kwan fits all that and more. If the Guardians continue to fall, could he be available? … I could see Orelvis Martinez, Fernando Perez, Kendry Rojas, Alan Roden and Joey Loperfido as a package for him. It wouldn’t be exactly that but it should get the conversation started at least. Thoughts? — Frank W.
The Guardians will listen to inquiries on Steven Kwan and he fits the Blue Jays’ need for an on-base traffic creator who also would be a Gold Glove defender in left field. I’m just not sure where the fit is from the Guardians’ perspective. They’re looking for middle-of-the-order power, and the Jays just don’t have that in their farm system or on the major-league roster (in terms of players they would consider dealing).
16. What is a realistic return for Emmanuel Clase? Feels like the Guards don’t give up on a premium asset unless they really get a strong return. Which teams should they be talking to? — Mark M.
The Guardians need offense. If they trade Clase, they need to focus on young bats. Offer him to the Dodgers for Andy Pages. Offer him to the Phillies for Aidan Miller. Offer him to the Rangers for Sebastian Walcott. Offer him to the Tigers for Kevin McGonigle. Offer him to the Yankees for Spencer Jones. Offer him to the Red Sox for Jarren Duran. You get my point.
17. What is the boldest move the Orioles could make now to get back in contention in 2026? — Jeff G.
Offer everyone up in trades except Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Jackson Holliday and Grayson Rodriguez. Don’t fall in love with your own players and prospects and be open-minded and wheel-and-deal until you have a contending pitching staff and an elite defense.
18. Red Sox-Mariners trade proposal: Jaren Durran for Bryan Woo or Logan Evans? — Brett M.
The Mariners shouldn’t trade Woo for Duran, but I’m on board if the Red Sox will take Evans for Durran. But I wouldn’t do that if I were Boston.
19. Will the Red Sox extend Alex Bregman before the trade deadline? … If the Sox go on a winning streak, establishing themselves as buyers at the deadline, what relief pitchers should they target? — Rich K.
The Red Sox would like to extend Bregman before the trade deadline, but it won’t be easy with Scott Boras as his agent. And, I’m hearing, in my conversations throughout the league, if he’s not extended, they could end up trading him to Seattle, Detroit or Milwaukee. But if I’m Boston and your scenario plays out, I would look to add Emmanuel Clase or Ryan Helsley.
20. Hey, Jim. ChiSox fan here. What is a realistic return for right-hander Adrian Houser? — Garrett S.
The return in a Houser trade would likely be two mid-level prospects with some risk and possible reward.

21. What would the Astros have to give up to the Rays for Brandon Lowe? Great fit for us as a left-handed bat who plays second base and is (under team control) through 2026. Do you think Tampa Bay would take Chas McCormick and one of either Walker Janek or Brice Matthews? — Todd L.
I think you could get Lowe for either Janek or Matthews. The Rays have been looking for a long-term solution at catcher, and Janek, a first-round pick last year out of Sam Houston, could end up being the answer for them.
It would be a steep price to pay for the often-injured Lowe. But the Astros can win the World Series this year, and that type of trade could put them over the top.
22. Hey Jim. I’m a huge Astros fan. Here’s my trade proposal:
Houston trades 2B/IF Brice Matthews, SP AJ Blubaugh and OF Jacob Melton to the Marlins for COF Jesús Sánchez and SP Edward Cabrera — Jon M
I think this one makes a lot of sense for both teams. Great trade idea!
23. Any thoughts on what the Mariners’ deadline might look like? The farm system has legitimate trade chips, but the market to date doesn’t scream anything that fans should be excited about. — Chris A.
The Mariners should do everything they can to make a trade with the Diamondbacks for third baseman Eugenio Suárez or first baseman Josh Naylor — or both for that matter. They have a strong enough farm system to get that done.
24. The Rangers have top-rated pitching and defense, which (could) serve them well in the playoffs, but can they even get there with a (below-average) offense. How do they change things around through the trade market? They certainly have a wealth of middle infielders and outfielders in the minors to trade who don’t have a chance to play anytime soon. — Scott A.
I’d like to see the Rangers try to trade for Jarren Duran and Josh Naylor to try to spark their offense in the second half to take advantage of their strong pitching staff, which entered Tuesday first in MLB in ERA, second in WHIP and third in batting average against.
25. How will the probable lockout after the 2026 season impact trade decisions (team control of players in 2027 and beyond) this year? — Stephen M.
My sense from talking to the front office decision-makers across the league is that it will have minimal impact on trade decisions at this year’s deadline. But good question.
