Strong storms, damaging winds possible today across region

The National Weather Service in Morristown has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook warning that strong to severe thunderstorms are likely across Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and portions of Western North Carolina today.
Forecasters said storms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening ahead of an approaching cold front. Damaging winds are the primary threat, but large hail and isolated flash flooding are also possible.
The outlook includes Carter, Johnson, Sullivan, Washington, Unicoi and Hawkins counties, along with much of East Tennessee and surrounding areas.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather forecasts throughout the day and be prepared to seek shelter if severe weather warnings are issued.
According to the weather service, the threat of widespread hazardous weather is expected to decrease after today, with a low probability of hazardous conditions from Saturday through Thursday.
The National Weather Service advises residents to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when severe storms are most likely to occur.
