SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) – Water-based activities at Winton Lake have been suspended after officials discovered a sewage leak that led to elevated bacteria levels in the lake.

Great Parks said routine water testing on June 12 detected increased levels of E. coli bacteria.

Following the test results, park officials posted warning signs around the lake advising visitors to wash their hands and avoid swallowing lake water. Handwashing stations were also installed near the shoreline.

A subsequent inspection uncovered a sewage leak, prompting Great Parks to halt all water-related recreation at Winton Lake.

The suspension includes fishing, kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding.

Despite the closure, other park activities remain open to the public.

The Kids Outdoor Adventure Expo is continuing as planned, and organizers said Saturday’s scheduled 5K, 10K and Kids Adventure Dash will still take place.

Great Parks said crews are actively working to flush the affected area and repair the damaged pipe.
