Severe storms blow through Lincoln, causing widespread tree damage and knocking out power

  • August 9, 2025

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — A severe thunderstorm with high winds, including a gust recorded at 91 mph, swept through Lincoln and the surrounding areas early Saturday morning.

The storm caused widespread tree damage and power outages, with more than 30,000 without power in Lincoln, and thousands out in Seward, Waverly and the surrounding areas as of 6:45 a.m.

Traffic Signals Out

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities reports 69 traffic signals are affected by the Saturday storm. Traffic signals are flashing yellow, flashing red, or are dark due to several power outages in the area. LTU is currently evaluating locations and time estimates for traffic signals to be restored.

LTU recommends if a vehicle approaches a dark traffic signal or flashing yellow or flashing red intersection, the driver should act as if the intersection is an all-way stop and proceed with caution.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation is evaluating potential tree damage and is currently coordinating cleanup efforts.

Current information on street closures is available at lincoln.ne.gov/closures or through the Waze mobile app.
