Unofficial results: Stuart Hene receives majority of votes, projected to become next Tyler mayor

Stuart Hene is projected to become the next mayor of Tyler after receiving the most votes in the City of Tyler mayoral runoff on Saturday.
Hene, a current councilmember and local attorney, received 57.43% of the vote, according to unofficial results reported Saturday night.
Results will still need to be canvassed, which can take up to two weeks.
Opponent John Nix, a former councilmember and local businessman, received 42.57% of the vote, or 3,833 votes, behind Hene’s 5,170 votes.
“What a run! We counted the cost of this path before running, and we are at peace with the results,” Nix said in a Facebook post on his campaign page Saturday night. “Thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers. We are so humbled to be a part of such a beautiful community.”
Of the 67,205 voters registered to vote in this election, 13.41% of voters turned out. The majority of ballots were cast during early voting.

The new mayor will be sworn in June 24.
Hene was born and raised in Tyler. Currently in his third term on the council, Hene said he hopes to be elected and continue the city’s momentum. In previous interviews with the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Hene identified his top three priorities as continuing smart, forward-thinking investments, supporting the Tyler’s Police and Fire Departments, and increasing transparency and accessibility.
The mayor serves as the city’s chief elected official, presiding over the city council, which is composed of six single-member districts, and working with the city manager. The mayor acts as a key policymaker, helping set city goals, services, projects and the annual budget while serving as a spokesperson for the city, according to the City of Tyler website.
The Tyler mayor serves two-year terms and is limited to three consecutive terms.
Current Mayor Don Warren, who has served in the role since November 2020, is retiring at the end of his term.
The mayor’s seat is nonpartisan.
