Ty Amundsen has joined Bobby Hurley’s men’s basketball coaching staff at Arizona State, following a highly successful run at Goodyear Millennium High School. Amundsen, who left Millennium three weeks ago without revealing his next move, led the Tigers to multiple deep playoff runs, including a 5A state runner-up finish in 2019 and 2020, and an Open Division runner-up in 2023. He built Millennium into one of Arizona’s top programs, highlighted by the return of 5-star senior Cameron Holmes and high-profile sophomore transfer Adan Diggs for the upcoming season. Both players are considered among the top recruits nationally, with Holmes being heavily recruited by ASU since his sophomore year.
This marks Amundsen’s first college coaching position. A veteran of Arizona high school basketball, he previously guided Goodyear Estrella Foothills to three straight 3A state titles from 2008–10 and spent time at Phoenix St. Mary’s before revitalizing Millennium in 2017. Amundsen’s coaching success is complemented by his family’s basketball legacy — his son J.T., Millennium’s all-time leader in made 3-pointers, now plays at Northern Arizona, and Holmes’ older brother, DaRon, a standout at Dayton and recent first-round NBA draft pick, plays for the Denver Nuggets. The opportunity to move into the college ranks at a Pac-12 program like ASU was enough to lure Amundsen from what could have been his most talented Millennium team yet.
