FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. — There’s a new little splash-maker in the Salish Sea!
The Center for Whale Research has confirmed the sighting of a new calf, designated L130, among the endangered southern resident killer whales of L Pod.
Researchers spotted the youngster with the pod on Sunday.
While the calf’s maternity and sex have not yet been confirmed, researchers say more observations are underway to learn more about the newest addition.
Based on its size, behavior, and physical characteristics, L130 is estimated to be between 1 and 3 months old.
The sighting offers a welcome moment for scientists and whale watchers alike as they continue monitoring the endangered population.
The Center for Whale Research, which has spent 50 years studying and documenting southern resident killer whales, said additional field observations will help determine the calf’s family connections.
For now, researchers are celebrating the arrival of L130 and welcoming the calf to L Pod.
