POMONA – A double murder suspect evaded police into Lancaster where spike strips and a PIT maneuver finally forced him to surrender Thursday.
Calls of gunfire inside an apartment complex June 18 led police to a man and woman injured an apartment hallway. Despite life-saving efforts, both publicly unidentified victims died at the scene, according to the Pomona police Department.
First responders were called to the 100 block of East Monterey Ave. around 3:22 p.m.
Police determined the suspect’s identity: 48-year-old Robert Galtman, and reportedly issued a citywide alert.
Law enforcement intercepted Galtman’s vehicle sometime before 5 p.m. as it was northbound on the 5 Freeway in the Newhall Pass area after the California Highway Patrol was surveilling the black Kia sedan.
Galtman allegedly pulled a U-turn and headed back southbound on the freeway before exiting at Lake Hughes Road.
Galtman reportedly avoided initial attempts to disable his Kia with spike strips as the pursuit dangerously moved into the Lancaster area, all the while tossing unknown items from his vehicle.
A successful use of the PIT maneuver disable the vehicle and Galtman surrendered without further incident around 7:30 p.m.
It is not publicly clear if investigators from the Pomona Police Major Crimes Unit have determined the motive for the double slaying.
