SAN ANTONIO – Two children were safely recovered from a home after a domestic dispute ended with one officer shot in the stomach, and the gunman and his estranged wife dead.
The shooting happened around 1 p.m. on Friday Red Hawk Ridge near Hardy Oak Boulevard.
According to a source familiar with the situation, an officer was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening wound after reportedly being shot below his protective vest.
“Fortunately, we understand that right now there were no vital organs that were struck,” said McManus.
According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, the suspect, who has yet to be positively identified, forced his way into the residence through a glass door with a handgun in his possession.
“He gets inside, kills his estranged or soon-to-be estranged wife, and barricades himself in one of the rooms,” said McManus.
The break-in resulted in a shootout and subsequent standoff with police, in which one officer was shot and rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said that upon forcing entry into the home during the standoff and found the suspect dead.
Two children, between the ages of 8 and 12, were found inside the home. Those children were removed from the home safely.
SWAT units were on scene, surrounding the area where police believe the suspect is barricaded inside. A police drone was seen flying around the scene, as well as small remote vehicles.
As of now, we are working to find out the identity of the suspect. McManus says he was not on their radar, although they have heard he may be a motorcycle gang member.
“That’s what we’re hearing. I don’t know that to be a fact, but that’s what we’re hearing,” said McManus.
