Luzerne County is ready to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States on July 4 after county workers decorated and cleaned the courthouse grounds.
The county’s Veteran’s Affairs Office bought 50 flags and planted on the courthouse lawn-one for each state. Patriotic flowers also adorn the planters near the River St. entrance, and the monuments honoring county war heroes have been cleaned.
County council approved a $3,150 allocation from the county’s Marcellus Shale natural-gas recreation funding to clean the monuments. The county also plans to announce more information about a large flag that will be hung on the courthouse.
