WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – For the second year in a row, testing has confirmed a human case of the mosquito-borne illness Jamestown Canyon virus.
Health officials have confirmed to WCAX that a person in Charlotte contracted the virus. Full details on the infection were not immediately available.
The first human detection of the disease in Vermont was in Windsor County last September.
Last year was the first time the state tested mosquitoes for the virus. It was found in mosquitoes in the Rutland, Marshfield, and Whitingham areas.
Most people don’t become ill from Jamestown Canyon virus, but some develop flu-like symptoms or become very sick. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, and headache.
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for Jamestown Canyon.
To cut your risk of mosquito bites, officials recommend wearing long sleeves and pants outdoors, limiting time outside at dusk and dawn, and using insect repellent.
