CROMWELL, CT. (WFSB) – Round 3 of the Travelers Championship finished with a twist on Saturday at TPC River Highlands, with large crowds expected throughout the day.
The morning featured an annual breakfast hosted by First Tee Connecticut. The event honored donors, celebrated student achievement and awarded scholarships to young participants in the program.
More than 70,000 kids across Connecticut are part of First Tee, which uses golf as a tool to teach life skills including confidence and resilience.
Breaking down the day of play
Viktor Hovland took the solo lead on the 18th hole after swapping leads with Scottie Scheffler all afternoon.
What fans are saying
The Travelers Championship fan zone drew large crowds despite rain earlier in the afternoon.
The fan zone is located next to the 17th and 18th holes and features food, yard games, photo opportunities and shaded seating. Company tents offer games and free merchandise. Attendees can also test their golf skills at a chipping challenge, a virtual golf simulator or a putting green.
Kenny from Winsted said the event has broad appeal.
“We come out here. We hang out. We get to see some entertainment with golf and it’s also kind of like hiking,” Kenny said. “You get to go to these vendors. It’s a good time out here. It’s family friendly. I think it’s worth coming to.”
James Furey of Fairfield said the activities added to the experience.
“We just watched golf and then over there we have all these stands,” Furey said. “They let you play golf games and there’s simulators and you could go putting and you can earn prizes which is really fun. And go Scottie!”
What fans should know before heading out
Officials are urging fans heading to the course to leave early. Traffic near the course entrance builds quickly as tee times ramp up.
Parking is first-come, first-served. Lots open one hour before gates and close one hour after play wraps for the day.
Sunday is the final day of the tournament.
