COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The iconic Mona Lisa painting is arguably one of the most famous pieces of art in human history.
While Leonardo da Vinci’s original masterpiece is permanent resident of the Louvre Museum in Paris, art lovers can enjoy the beauty of his work in the numerous reimagined pieces found globally.
In the Short North, the Mona Lisa has been a staple for nearly four decades, serving as a visual landmark in the ‘art and soul’ of Columbus.
Now after 36 years, the infamous mural has been decommissioned.
The Short North Arts District teamed up with the Greater Columbus Arts Council to resurrect the immortal smile of Mona Lisa in a new mural, She Moves with Color by Mandi Caskey, who uses the artist tag Miss Birdy.
The commemorative plaque includes the art piece as part of the district’s public art story and celebrates the evolution of one of Columbus’ most recognizable mural sites, while also honoring the legacy of the original Mona Lisa mural.
The district hopes to continue to keep art part of the every day lives of local residents. The new mural is located on the second-story, south-facing exterior of the Moxy Hotel on North High Street, right above The Eagle.
