Actions at 4 starts now. Right now we are kicking off one of the hottest weeks of the year. Temperatures are in the 80s now and that will rise as we get closer to the 4th of July. Thanks so much for joining us this afternoon for Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 at 4 o’clock. I’m Kelly Sasso. Hey, good afternoon. I’m Andrew Stocky, and the weather, of course, topping your top 4 stories at 4 o’clock on this Monday, right, as we said, temperatures are in the upper 80s and 80s now, but believe it or not, this is the coolest day of the week starting. Tomorrow temps will soar into the high 90s with feels like temps into the 100s. Already we have *** heat advisory in place, and of course this all comes as thousands of people will be traveling to various Fourth of July in America 250 events across the area. *** police officer is stabbed and *** suspect is dead after *** domestic situation in Indiana County. State police say 35-year-old Andrew Wade Herman threatened officers while they were interviewing witnesses. Herman was being detained. Troopers say he stabbed the officer multiple times. That officer then shot Herman. The Supreme Court says states can count late arriving mail-in ballots. The 5 to 4 ruling allows ballots to be counted that arrive to elections offices late but are postmarked by election day. This decision is *** defeat for President Trump, who argues most mail-in balloting leads to fraud. The 5 week closure of Commercial Street has begun. The road that goes underneath the Commercial Street Bridge will remain closed for the bridge replacement project. The 25 day closure of the Parkway East is set to begin in just 11 days from now. You have been warned. Those are your top 4 stories at 4 o’clock on this Monday. Time and I get back to Pittsburgh’s action weather. I’m not ready for the closure. I’m not ready for the heat that’s coming. It doesn’t matter. Both are coming whether we like it or not. We have Chief meteorologist Mike Harvey in studio to walk us through this. Uh, Mike, really this heat wave starts tomorrow. Oh, it certainly does, and I mean it is going to be dangerous heat we’ll be seeing as we go through the week and feeling right now we have *** temperature currently of 86 degrees outside. Uh, high temperature so far 86 this morning. We started off at 66. As we take *** look at tomorrow, we’ll be seeing highs that will be reaching the 90s. In fact, many locations are going to be heading into the mid 90s for tomorrow. These are your high temperatures for. Tomorrow we’re looking at *** high of 94 in Pittsburgh, 96 Beaver and Newcastle, 93 in Greensburg, and 92 in Waynesburg. And as we, uh, go forward with the heat advisory, it starts tomorrow at 11 a.m., but look at how far it goes all the way until 10:00 p.m. on Friday. Basically the entire week is under *** heat advisory because of the extreme temperatures and the extreme humidity that we will be feeling as we go through the week. So here’s what we’re in for on Tuesday. High of 94, but it’ll feel like 102 degrees with the humidity Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The real tough days, 97, 98, and 97, right around 105 degrees is what it’s going to feel like each of those days. So obviously this is by far going to be the hottest day of the week. I’ll let you know what you can expect for the holiday weekend coming up in just *** few minutes. OK, Mike, thanks so much. With that code red heat advisory, the city is now activating 5 of its. centers, those are going to be open today through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. and while it is this hot, you’ll want to make sure you’re checking in on any elderly relatives or neighbors you might have as well. Also, you need to take *** little extra care of your pets. That’s right. It is worth noting Libre’s law is in effect here in Pennsylvania. That means pets cannot be tethered outside for more than 30 minutes when the temperatures rise above 90 degrees. Humane Animal Rescue advises you should always make sure your pet has fresh. Cool water, limit outdoor activities, provide shade and shelter, and never leave pets inside of cars. Yeah, that heat will certainly add some stress to our power grid this week. We checked in with Duquesne Light, who is advising you to make sure that your phones and any other electronics are fully charged at all times this week. Also, you want to make sure you have ice packs and cold water and just like you would during *** thunderstorm, keep your emergency preparedness kit full. Duquesne Light says they are going to be prepared as well this week. We’re staffing up our field operations crew as well as our operations center in order to be prepared for any possible situations that may arise. Extra heat puts strain on the grid in *** couple of different ways. One, there’s just more use of the grid. People are running fans, air conditioners, things like that, and those machines struggle to keep up with the load. This is an important week to also make sure you have the free WTAE app downloaded. It allows you to track the temperatures and the heat index throughout the day. Covering Washington County this afternoon, firefighters had *** battle of high temperatures while fighting *** house fire in Buffalo Township. It all began just before 11 this morning on Hathaway Road. Not *** lot of visible damage from the outside, but we could see water lines running into the home. We asked the chief about the impacts from the heat. He said today was not so bad, but they are getting ready for later this week. The next couple of days, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday especially, we’ll be calling extra alarms, extra manpower in, even though this seems like *** simple room and content fire. In our book this is *** second alarm fire with those heats. Getting that manpower, getting guys rotated in and out, uh, hydrating is, is going to be the way to go. The chief says no one was home at the time, but some pets were rescued here, and they’re all OK this afternoon. All right, I want to get you the latest now on *** police officer who was stabbed and then shot and killed the suspect. We learned today 35 year old Andrew Herman was the man killed in last night’s incident in Indianaboro, Indiana County. Pennsylvania State Police said the initial call last night was for *** domestic dispute. Pittsburgh’s Action News reporter Ed Diorio has the very latest on the situation. He’s live tonight from the place where the place where the shooting actually happened. So Ed, what can you tell us? Well, Andrew, Andrew Herman was the man who lived in *** home here along Cherry Avenue, North Cherry Avenue in this Indiana borough neighborhood, and those with state police say it was his actions on Sunday evening that led to him being chased into this patch of grass and eventually shot and killed by an Indiana borough police officer. This entire situation, according to investigators, say they say that it started with ***. Call coming from *** woman who was also inside that house, the same one as Herman, and it was described as *** domestic dispute to respond to. And when Indiana police arrived, borough police that is, Herman allegedly threatened officers with *** shovel and then ran away quickly from the house after that. He was caught when the 35 year old allegedly stabbed *** borough police officer multiple times in the face and the head, and that is when an officer shot and killed Herman. While that officer was attempting to detain the suspect, the suspect produced *** knife and stabbed the officer about the officer’s head and face multiple times. I do not have an update on the officer’s condition today, but I know that they are recovering, and we’re very thankful for that. So Ed, did those with the Indiana Police Department have anything to say after yesterday’s incident? They did not, Andrew. All of my questions when I reached out to the Indiana Borough Police chief and other members of the borough staff, they were all redirected towards Pennsylvania State Police. Their major crimes unit is taking over the investigation at this point, and all of my inquiries have been left with either no response or directed to PSP. But when I talked to those in this neighborhood, they all say this is *** jarring experience for them, and you’re going to hear. Some firsthand account from people who saw what happened on Sunday evening. That’s coming up in the reports at 5 and 6 covering Indiana County tonight in Indiana, Ed Diorio, Pittsburgh’s Action News war. OK, Ed, thank you. In Armstrong County, *** woman died in *** stabbing in Gilpin Township. State police say they were called in about 4:30 yesterday afternoon for *** report of *** 79-year-old woman who was stabbed. The victim was Rosalynn Cooper. The suspect is her daughter-in-law. Police say she barricaded herself inside the house on Shenley Road and threatened to kill police if they came in. Around 1:20 this morning. She did surrender and was arrested. During the police interview, she allegedly admitted to stabbing Cooper during an argument. She is now being charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault. Well, just in this afternoon, police in Verona have arrested the man accused of brutally attacking someone at *** bar. So this is their suspect, Michael Powell. They say on Saturday Powell and the victim were arguing over comments that Powell made about female customers at the hula bar. Police believe Powell hit the victim in the back of the head with glass. That victim, at last check was intubated at the hospital. We are working to learn more about *** shooting overnight in Pittsburgh’s Sheridan neighborhood. Shots were fired around 1 this morning along Bergman Street near Narcissus Avenue. Police say officers were called for *** domestic incident when they found *** man shot in the thigh. Investigators are now questioning *** woman at police headquarters. More now on another one of our top 4 stories at 4 o’clock today. The countdown to the Parkway East closure. Just 11 days to go now until the Commercial Street Bridge replacement officially gets underway, and ahead of that, another closure began today. This one will. Last for the next 5 weeks. It impacts Commercial Street that runs right underneath the bridge, and it is *** really big link between the city of Pittsburgh and Swissville. And only on 4 this afternoon, Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reporter Yasmin Rodriguez talked with some business owners who are bracing for the closure. Yasmin. Andrew, that’s right. Dave Guerin and his company EH Griffith, they’ve been around the area for *** while, so they’re no stranger to the traffic headaches that are in and out of Swissville. They say it’s already *** nightmare navigating their 50-foot tractor trailers, and that’s with all of the roads open. So with that impending 25 day closure, well, they’re not only anticipating higher traffic, but *** dip in business. Well, EH Griffith is located here in Swissville along Palmer Street, and it’s been in the location since the 19. So the area like I had mentioned is already endowed with traffic headaches, but once that Parkway East closes in about *** week and *** half, the travel headaches are going to be amplified for the business. EH Griffith is the lead distributor for the Tourro lawnmower for Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, so deliveries are *** pretty big part of his business. And now David says he’s going to see that delivery portion of his business take *** hit because of the massive delays that are bound to happen once the Parkway East closes. I just can’t imagine the 100,000 vehicles going through Squirrel Hill, Oakland, Swissville on these tiny streets that are backed up already. Yeah, I think that’s what *** lot of people are thinking about. Yasmin, did he say what he’s going to do? Did he mention any plan he has for these deliveries or how many his company makes every day? So Kelly, his company does make about 10 deliveries *** day. As for *** plan, not really. Dave just tells me he’s going to have to wait and see. See, his plan was there’s another bridge located at the end of Palmer Street, and that was going to be the other access point, but that bridge has been closed for about 5 years, and he was told it was going to be open. Last July, so now there’s really no plan in place, but more on that other bridge closure coming up at 5 covering Allegheny County in Swissville. Yasmin Rodriguez, Pittsburgh’s Action News 4. As of 10 p.m., West Penn Power said all power in the area had been restored. According to 511PA, PennDOT’s traffic monitoring website, the road had reopened. Dryridge VFD said in a post that eastbound Route 30 is closed between Frye Farm Road & Village Drive (Mountainview) due to a downed tree and wires.
“Please use alternative routes & avoid the area if possible for the next few hours,” the post said.
As of 10 p.m., West Penn Power said all power in the area had been restored.
According to 511PA, PennDOT’s traffic monitoring website, the road had reopened.
