BOSTON — Wilson Contreras hit a three-run homer, Caleb Durbin added a home run of his own and the Boston Red Sox beat the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Monday to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games.
Contreras opened the scoring for Boston with his 18th homer of the year to jump out to a 3-1 lead before Durbin followed with a solo shot to left two batters later. Contreras had his night cut early, however, after being ejected in the third inning for mocking the ABS challenge helmet tap on a checked swing strikeout.
Wilyer Abreu scored Tsung-Che Cheng with a sacrifice fly in the second, and Carlos Narvaez added a sac-fly of his own in the third to complete the scoring.
Ranger Suarez (4-3) pitched 6 innings and struck out 8 while giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. Suarez ran the Red Sox’s streak of consecutive quality starts to 12, two shy of the franchise record of 14 set in 1988. Boston starters are 6-1 with a 1.75 ERA over the last 12 games.
James Wood hit his 21st homer of the year, a 441-foot solo shot to right in the first inning, and CJ Abrams tacked on a bases-loaded, two-run double in the sixth to break an 0-for-15 slump.
Miles Mikolas (2-7) surrendered 6 runs on 9 hits in 7 innings while striking out 3 for the Nationals.
The Red Sox have won 8 of their last 11.
BLUE JAYS 2, METS 1 George Springer capitalized on two miscues to circle the bases with a Little League homer, Trey Yesavage pitched into the seventh inning and host Toronto beat bumbling New York, snapping a six-game losing streak. Francisco Lindor homered but the Mets lost for the ninth time in 10 games. Yesavage (4-3) allowed 1 run and 3 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He walked none and struck out three. Springer led off the bottom of the first with a line drive to left field that bounced past Juan Soto and rolled to the wall as he raced to third for a triple. Rookie center fielder A.J. Ewing came over to back up but bobbled the ball, allowing Springer to score without a play. Sean Manaea (1-3) permitted 2 runs and 3 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
PIRATES 11, PHILLIES 7 Esmerlyn Valdez and Jared Triolo both hit home runs to help visiting Pittsburgh escape an early five-run deficit, and Endy Rodriguez closed the deal with a three-run homer in the ninth for a win over Philadelphia. The Pirates posted a six-run fifth inning against struggling starter Aaron Nola (3-5). The Phillies jumped on starter Braxton Ashcraft for five runs. Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh each homered in the first inning, and Bryce Harper hit his 20th of the season in the third inning. Ashcraft (8-3) settled down and went six innings for the win.
BREWERS 5, REDS 3 Joey Ortiz hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning to give host Milwaukee a comeback victory over Cincinnati. Sal Frelick singled with one out in the eighth off Sam Moll (1-6) and advanced on a sacrifice. Tejay Antone relieved and Ortiz sent a 1-1 pitch 412 feet to center for his second homer. Aaron Ashby (11-1) tossed a scoreless eighth for his major league-leading 11th victory, and Trevor Megill finished with a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 13 opportunities. Reds center fielder Dane Myers was removed from the field on a cart in the fourth inning after crashing into the outfield wall on a running back-handed grab.
CUBS 3, PADRES 2 Seiya Suzuki hit a game-ending single off Mason Miller in the ninth inning as host Chicago beat San Diego. Dansby Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong began the ninth with a pair of singles off Jason Adam (2-2). Miller then came in and surrendered Alex Bregman’s single to center, loading the bases. Michael Busch followed with a flyball to left, and Jase Bowen cut down Swanson when he attempted to score on the play. Suzuki then hit a deep flyball, sending Bowen all the way back to the ivy-covered wall. Bowen tried to make a leaping catch, but was unable to haul it in.
MARLINS 10, ROCKIES 7 Griffin Conine hit a three-run homer off the third-deck facade in right field and right-hander Sandy Alcantara improved to 6-0 in June as visiting Miami rallied for a win over Colorado. Trailing 5-2 in the fifth, Otto Lopez started the inning with a solo homer. Conine entered the game as a pinch hitter and smashed a changeup from Victor Vodnik (2-3) to send the Marlins on their way to a seventh straight win over Colorado. Alcantara (9-4) went 5 2/3 innings and surrendered five runs.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
WHITE SOX 8, ORIOLES 2 Colson Montgomery hit a go-ahead double in the eighth inning, Jacob Gonzalez drove in three runs and visiting Chicago beat Baltimore in the opener of their series. Grant Taylor (4-1) pitched two hitless innings and struck out two. Sean Burke went 5 1/3 innings and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 8. Grant Wolfram (1-2) gave up the winning run. Shane Baz threw seven innings of two-run ball, surrendering 4 hits and striking out 6 on a career-high 109 pitches.
TIGERS 7, YANKEES 3 Casey Mize matched a career high with 10 strikeouts over seven innings and visiting Detroit capitalized on shoddy defense by slumping New York. The only baserunner Mize (3-5) allowed came on rookie Spencer Jones’ leadoff double in the third. Tigers rookies Hao-Yu Lee and Kevin McGonigle drove in two runs apiece after errors by third baseman Jose Caballero and left fielder Cody Bellinger. Lee hit a two-run single off Ryan Weathers (3-6) during a four-run second inning four batters after Caballero committed a throwing error. McGonigle lined a two-run single for a 7-0 lead one batter after Bellinger dropped a flyball by Dillon Dingler near the corner.
RANGERS 6, GUARDIANS 3 Cameron Cauley tripled in the seventh inning for his first hit in his major league debut before scoring the go-ahead run on a single by Nicky Lopez to help visiting Texas beat Cleveland for a fifth straight victory. Justin Foscue followed with a two-out double that scored Lopez from first to make it 4-2. That chased Guardians rookie Parker Messick (7-5), who allowed 4 runs and 8 hits in 6 2/3 innings.
TWINS 5, ASTROS 4 Royce Lewis and Victor Caratini hit back-to-back homers, Zebby Matthews (4-5) pitched seven stingy innings and visiting Minnesota held off a late rally by Houston. Josh Bell launched a two-run shot for the Twins, who led 5-1 before Travis Adams gave up a two-run homer to Taylor Trammell with two outs in the ninth.
