GENESEE CO., Mich. (WJRT) – Families across Mid-Michigan are flocking to local splash pads as a free way to escape the heat.
Parents said community spaces offer a fun way to keep kids active and cool without stretching the family budget. Mickey Lafond spent his afternoon at the splash pad at Physician’s Park in Grand Blanc with his children.
“Doing what we can to keep the babies cool,” Lafond said.
Emily Trowbridge brought her daughter to the splash pad and said these community spaces give kids a safe place to run around. She said her daughter loves making friends and is having fun with the other children.
“It’s free. It’s fun. It’s hot. So, this is the best way to cool off,” Trowbridge said.
Health officials remind parents to keep children hydrated, apply sunscreen regularly, take breaks in the shade and watch for early warning signs to avoid a heat-related illness. As the heat wave continues, splash pads are expected to stay busy.
The splash pad at Physician’s Park will remain open during the week all summer starting at 10 a.m. Libraries, movie theaters, museums and ice cream shops also offer budget-friendly options to stay cool this summer in Genesee County.
