List of America 250 Events Being Canceled, Replanned Over Major Heat Wave

A scorching heat wave pushing temperatures past 100 degrees in the Northeast ahead of the Fourth of July has triggered a string of cancellations of 250th-anniversary events.

From Philadelphia to New York, dozens of parades, lectures, and fireworks have been canceled, postponed, or moved indoors, as officials try to keep residents safe during what are expected to be extremely dangerous conditions.

“The parade is one of our community’s most beloved traditions, and we share in the disappointment of its cancellation, especially as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday,” Jayne Musonye, Interim Municipal Administrator of Norristown, Pennsylvania, said in a statement reported by AccuWeather after the city announced the event’s cancellation.

“With dangerous heat in the forecast, the safety of our families, our marchers, and our first responders must come first.”

Washington, D.C. will be hotter than 99 percent of the world on Friday, according to Washington Post meteorologist Ben Noll.

“Only parts of Africa’s Sahara Desert, the Middle East, China’s Gobi Desert and a few spots in the Desert Southwest will be hotter,” Noll posted on X on Thursday.

Organizers of the America 250 celebrations on Washington’s National Mall have implemented a range of heat safety measures as temperatures climb into the upper 90s and heat index values approach or exceed 100 degrees. At the Great American State Fair, officials have established free water stations and hydration points, are distributing complimentary bottled water to people waiting for Fourth of July fireworks and after they pass through security checkpoints, and have installed misting stations to help attendees cool down.

States participating in the fair also have climate-controlled tents where visitors can take a break from the heat. District officials have urged attendees to plan ahead, stay hydrated, seek shade or air conditioning when possible, and take advantage of available cooling resources.

In Colorado, fireworks have been canceled in at least eight cities, as officials fear the risk of starting potentially devastating fires.
