LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A Lancaster County wildlife center took in an animal it may only see once in a lifetime: a fledgling albino cardinal.
Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, based in Washington Borough, said the odds of seeing an albino cardinal are about 1 in 30,000.
The cardinal was found under a car and appeared to be injured, according to Raven Ridge.
“Our eyes widened and our jaws dropped as we realized we were witnessing a rare occurrence that most people never see outside of pictures,” the wildlife center wrote. “This was a fledgling albino cardinal.”
Albino cardinals face survival challenges due to often poor vision and a color that makes them more vulnerable to predators.
Because of the slim chances of survival, Raven Ridge said the cardinal will be kept at its center.
