Wildfire off Tetherow Road in northwest Redmond reaches ‘Go Now’ evacuations

Fire crews responded to a large wildfire July 4 near Coyner Avenue and Helmholtz Way in northwest Redmond that forced residents in the area to evacuate.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office announced Level 3 “Go Now” evacuations for areas north of Tetherow Road, between Ivankovich Way and Helmholtz Way aligned with the end of Ivankovich Way in northwest Redmond late Saturday evening. Residents in the Level 3 zone were told to evacuate immediately as there is extreme danger.
Residents were told to not delay gathering belongings.
As of 10:11 p.m., Central Oregon Wildfire Info reported the fire to be seven acres and 0% contained.
Level 2 “Get Set” evacuation orders were in place for areas south of the Level 3 zone, near Northwest Maple Avenue, east of the Deschutes River to Helmholtz Way and areas west of Ivankovich Way. Residents in the Level 2 area were told to remain prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.
Highland Baptist Church, 3100 SW Highland Ave. in Redmond, was established as a temporary evacuation point.
Interagency crews responded with five fire engines, a hand crew, water tender and dozer. The cause of the fire was under investigation. Bureau of Land Management was working with the newly established U.S. Wildland Fire Service to coordinate with Central Oregon Fire Management Service.
