BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WSBT) — A new golf course opened this spring at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor.
Designed by one of the sport’s biggest names.
The golf club at Harbor Shores will forever be linked to Colin Montgomerie.
The World Golf Hall of Famer won his first major championship in Benton Harbor 12 years ago.
He came back on Monday to celebrate his latest triumph.
Harbor Shores’ new Wee Course is open, and its designer hit the course Monday.
The Wee Course at Harbor Shores, which opened this spring, is a nine-hole short course, targeted at introducing young players to the sport.
Montgomerie designed the golf course and was back in Benton Harbor to play the course for himself for the first time.
During an exclusive conversation with Montgomerie, WSBT Sports asked the two-time Senior PGA Champion what the community of Benton Harbor means to him.
“It’s like a second home to me. This is a second home to me, Benton Harbor, St. Joseph. Lovely community feel, you know, and that’s what it’s about. That big course out there, the Harbor Shores, the big course out there, is a fantastic golf course, a real championship golf course. Laid out by Jack Nicklaus, obviously, but it was a fantastic course that I enjoyed thoroughly and happened to have my first American sort of 72-hole stroke play win here. And it means an awful lot to me,” said Colin Montgomerie, Wee Course Designer and the 2014 Senior PGA champ.
WSBT 22 was the only local station following Colin Montgomerie during his first round on the Wee Course.
And what a round it was!
