Newport Aquarium unveils sea turtle sculpture made from recycled materials

NEWPORT, Ky. (WKRC) – The Newport Aquarium unveiled its sea turtle sculpture Wednesday as part of its new Seas the Summer festival.

The sculpture, named “SEAS the Change: Lending Denver a Helping Hand,” was made from over 140 pounds of recycled materials by students with learning disabilities at Cincinnati’s Springer School and Center. Inspired by the aquarium’s beloved sea turtle Denver, the artwork will be displayed in the visitor lobby throughout the new summer festival.

The materials were sourced through the Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub.

“The students who built this sculpture crafted him out of recycled metal, CDs, pool noodles, egg cartons, and pretty much anything else that might have otherwise made its way to our oceans and waterways. The result is truly amazing,” said Rebecca Foster, Newport Aquarium, Executive Director

The exhibit will remain on display through August 30 as part of the aquarium’s summer festival.
