TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – A west Alabama man is frustrated and concerned after he says coyotes are coming on his property at night and killing his pets.
For Jeff Konieczki, this started two years ago and gotten worse in recent weeks. He’s lost 10 of his feral cats and said he has photos to prove his backyard is being invaded by at least two coyotes.
“This is beginning to test my patience because of the safety,” said Konieczki.
The game cameras on the back of Jeff Konieczki’s home on Country Club Circle in Tuscaloosa captured the ‘invaders’ at night and sometimes in broad daylight.
“I’m scared. I’ve never seen anything so big and so ferocious,” said Konieczki.
Konieczki is certain the coyotes sniffing around in his yard are hybrids. He estimated one weighs around 80 pounds.
“This large one? I say is a hybrid between a dog and a coyote. It’s so big,” said Konieczki.
Hybrid or not they’ve been feasting on his cats, killing 10 of his feral cats in recent weeks. Animal control has given him a large cage to trap the animals. Konieczki has added another one a few yards away and said plans to use raw chicken as bait.
“These animals seem to be showing up every two nights. I guess they have a feeding they do,” said Konieczki.
Animal control advises not to deal with coyotes one-on-one for safety reasons. Alert your local animal control office or the game warden.
“We have a huge ravine behind us and apparently they’ve made their home there and they’ve taking out our cats on a daily basis in the last couple of weeks,” said Konieczki.
Konieczki is facing his coyote problem head on with a steely eye determination to stand his ground and protect his family. He told WBRC he was able to kill one of the coyotes two years ago, but he says they’re still coming back.
