LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries, and serious accidents no longer have to leave the region to receive specialized rehabilitation care.
Centra officially opened its new rehabilitation hospital, expanding access to inpatient recovery services close to home.
The new facility is the first of its kind in the area, offering more than 50 inpatient rehabilitation beds and creating nearly 200 jobs in the community.
Hundreds of community members, local leaders, and health care workers gathered for the grand opening to celebrate the addition of the region’s newest health care facility.

Centra leaders said the hospital was designed with patient recovery as the top priority. The facility features advanced technology for treating brain injuries, state-of-the-art therapy gyms, apartment-style daily living spaces and outdoor courtyards designed to help patients regain strength and independence.
“We have a lot of new technology and a lot of new equipment in the gym and in the patients’ rooms,” said Astrid Gonzalez Parrilla, CEO of Centra Rehabilitation Hospital. “But the main thing is our team members are here and are serving our community.”
Russ Bailey, president of Lifepoint Rehabilitation, said keeping patients close to home is one of the hospital’s greatest benefits.
“I think the biggest piece of this, as you think about these services being offered locally, is the ability for patients and family members to be served locally and not have to migrate to other parts of the state to receive this care,” Bailey said.
The hospital has already begun accepting patients, providing residents with a new option for specialized rehabilitation care without leaving the area.
Hospital leaders said the new facility will deliver high-quality, specialized rehabilitation services while allowing patients to recover closer to their families, support systems and communities.
