The NHL trade winds swept through the league on Monday, but they remain more noise than action. Teams are calling the Vancouver Canucks about Elias Pettersson, Shane Wright let known his preferred trade destination, and the Nashville Predators must move a few players to get roster compliant. Elsewhere in the Daily, the Buffalo Sabres locked down Peyton Krebs, the arbitration hearing dates were announced, and we began Penguins Prospects week with five names you might not know but should.

Prospect week is always tough because it seems to bring out the most pedantic among us. Fortunately, I can state this clearly: I–on behalf of PHN–have spent a lot of time watching these players in person. Development Camp. Rookie Camp. Wilkes-Barre. Other AHL cities. And the Prospects Challenge. After 20 years of doing this, talking to the pros behind the scenes, friends who work on the player development side, and all the while aiming to get better at the scouting and analysis at every chance, you’re getting the straight scoop. A perfect ranking is impossible, but I’m comfortable with the three-criterion points system and the fact that I’ve been able to get a real sense of many of the prospects and their current stage of development.

Of course, the first comment was outrage, OUTRAGE!, at the rankings. Look, you can ask me questions, you can posit what you’ve seen, but if you’re going to be obnoxious because you’ve adopted a prospect or followed their box score, I’m just going to hit mute.

Greetings from Wellsboro, Pa, where my annual trip is off to a rousing start. It was a great ride and an amazing $30 steak dinner, but I always forget, this is not a nighttime town. Not even a little. I decided to take a walk around 9 p.m., and I was the only soul out and about. Even the movie theater had the lights off by 9:30 p.m.

In fairness, the movies out right now are absolute trash, but I digress.

I bought a pair of knockoff AI glasses off the interwebs just for motorcycle rides. The video is surprisingly good, but the sound was terrible. Part of the fun is the purrrrr of the engine as you roll through the mountains. Get a bike. I’ll take you on some summer adventures.

As you’ll see in the first few seconds, I swear the sky bends a few miles past Mt. Jewett (Kinzua Bridge). First, you’re under the clouds, everything is normal, but then you enter that little stretch of trees, and emerge at 65 mph riding into the clouds. Not long after that, there’s a 75-mile stretch with mountains on both sides that begins just before a little town, Smethport, which used to have an enormous year-round Christmas store, to a smaller town called Galeton, all of which just makes me happy. And then you roll into Wellsboro with gas lamp street lights, tree-lined streets, and my 150-year-old hotel.

I’ll get a little better at holding my head still. Wait until I show you the mountain twisties of Rt. 144 on the ride home…

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The arbitration hearing is set. The Penguins and Nick Robertson are on the clock.

Here are the prospects you may not have heard of, but probably will. Surprisingly, there are a couple of players–if not a few–in the 16-20 range who have a real chance to make the show. So, let’s get into the Penguins prospect rankings.

The Province: Ben Kuzma reports that Shane Wright has decided he doesn’t want to move far, but he certainly wants a rebuilding team. And he’s misunderstood. Is this the end of the NHL trade chatter around Shane Wright? He wants to be traded to Vancouver.

Being bluntly honest, Vancouver has not proven to be a conducive environment for a little while. In fact, it’s been the opposite. If he’s looking for a prominent, I am a little surprised he didn’t want one of the eastern teams looking for a center, including the Penguins.

NHLtraderumors.me: Well then, it’s not the Penguins. Teams are calling Vancouver about center Elias Pettersson, and Farhan Lalji of TSN doth report that the LA Kings have kicked the tires, but talks didn’t get past center ice.

TSN: Travis Yost takes a good, hard look at Pettersson’s trade value. Yost always likes the numbers aspect, but Pettersson goes beyond that. Buyer beware.

The Tenessean: What happens when you have 26 legit players on your NHL roster but can only carry a maximum of 23? Welp, that means the Nashville Predators are necessarily going to make trades. The question is–who?

Sportsnet: It was a big day for the Buffalo Sabres. They hired John Davidson as a senior advisor, and they locked down Peyton Krebs with a new contract.

Buffalo is on a heater, minus losing Alex Tuch.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Matthew Tkachuk had some (glowing) words for Jack Hughes about Hughes’s new teammates–and departed Florida Panthers–Jesper Boqvist and Evan Rodrigues.
