Multiple downtown Sacramento buildings evacuated due to gas leak, officials say
Begin with breaking news and that breaking news is in downtown Sacramento. Multiple buildings are evacuated right now after *** construction crew hit *** gas line. They were doing work near the intersection of 11th and 8th Streets. KCRA 3’s Andres Valle is live at the scene with what he’s uncovered. Yes, so Curtis, Lisa, this is exactly where it all happened right here. So show you exactly where those construction crews hit that gas line. You can see PG&E crews all surrounding this intersection right here on 12th and on 11th and 8th right now, and crews were trying to dig *** new sewer line into this new construction building right here while they were doing. That’s when they hit that gas line. Sacramento City Fire does let me know that they have turned off gas in this area and the evacuation orders still remain in place, and those evacuation orders actually took place in this state building right here. So when we arrived on scene, we saw *** lot of state workers lined out trying to get back inside as they were trying to figure out exactly what was going on. And here’s what they told us. There’s people that live far away. I’m like taking care of an animal in Oakland and again like if RTO was like available to us at this point, like I really feel like it would calm *** lot of the nerves, but it’s like really scary because it’s like. It also felt like really *** long time before they called the leak is what I’m hearing from somebody. It was like really smelly, extremely unorganized. You couldn’t hear any of the calls in there. And what type of work environment is that that you want state workers to be working in *** building where we can’t hear the announcements when when there’s *** gas leak? It’s really, really dangerous. Now Sacramento City Fire did let me know that there were about 1000 people who were evacuated and from their point of view they actually got out of the building quite quickly. Now we spoke to some of those people who did get back inside to retrieve their keys, their bags, all of that. They told me when they walked in it did smell like *** strong smell of gas, but. Of those state workers have already left for the day. Their day usually ends right around 4 p.m., but back out here again, PG&E crews are still on scene as they, you know, work to fix this issue. So there is still no timeline of when that will be resolved. But of course once we learn that, we’ll of course update you. But for now we’re live here in downtown Sacramento. I’m Rosa Ray.

Crews from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and the Sacramento Fire Department are at 11th and H streets in response to the leak. The fire department said construction crews hit a large gas line.
A few buildings are being evacuated, the fire department said. The fire department said about 1,000 people were evacuated from a high rise near the main gas line. The gas is shut off in the area, officials said.

Officials said there’s a two-block radius blocked off to keep the area clear.
