Re “A promising path to a bipartisan fix of Social Security emerges” (July 10): A “needs based” Social Security change is a horrid idea. I’ve spent 40 years of my working life budgeting and saving to have a good retirement with my savings plus my expected Social Security benefits. This includes bringing lunch from home and taking modest family vacations.
A means-based Social Securty system? Talk about destroying the middle class. Punishing planners and savers while rewarding non-savers? The thought of some government agency telling me, “Sorry, you saved too much for retirement, we’re giving your share of the benefit you planned for to someone else who didn’t save” is gut-wrenching.
What is next? Taxing my retirement account at a higher rate to also pay for the non-savers?
