State police say they are investigating an apparent drowning in Canterbury.According to state police, just before 1 p.m. Marine Patrol was called about a swimmer who went underwater in the Merrimack River and did not resurface. The man, identified as 19-year-old Robert Batchelder of Manchester, had gone for a swim with his coworkers. He was found in the middle of the river.Rescue crews performed lifesaving measures, but Batchelder was pronounced dead at the hospital. According to the investigation so far, multiple people tried to help him when he began to struggle but he went underwater before they could reach him.
