These poor guys are trying to move a fridge in front of the door just to be able to secure it,” Sgt. Edward Igoe said. He then left the Starbucks before deputies arrived, but the sheriff’s office said one deputy saw a man matching his description run across the road to an open garage and stab a woman. SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

A man accused of stabbing two women died Wednesday morning after a deputy fatally shot him to stop the attack, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said.

The shooting that also left two people injured occurred near Diablo Drive and Woodforest Drive, north of Elkhorn Boulevard, the sheriff’s office said. All officers are OK, the sheriff’s office said.

A spokesperson with the sheriff’s office said that a man was threatening employees at a nearby Starbucks on Diablo Drive with what was described as a “kitchen knife.”

“The employees inside the Starbucks actually fled into a back room and attempted to barricade as he was trying to push through.

When the woman’s daughter came to help, the man stabbed her, too. Both have serious injuries.

The spokesperson said the deputy who witnessed what is being called a “stranger attack” shot and killed the man.

“For the deputy that heroically arrived on scene and was able to stop this man from murdering the two adult women, that he was hell bent on killing, you know, that it’s still a very, very difficult situation to be in,” Igoe said.

The women were identified as a 63-year-old mother and 26-year-old daughter, the sheriff’s office said.

There is no known relation between the women and the man at this time, the sheriff’s office said. The man is described by witnesses as a homeless individual.

“Absolutely no relationship between any of them. This monster just saw an open garage, saw a victim, and immediately started attacking,” Igoe said.

Neighbors described the scene as chaotic and frightening.

Cassius Ekeh, who lives next door, said he initially thought the commotion was caused by barking dogs.

“I had my garage open, I walked out, I kind of heard some screaming. Like it. They have dogs next door. So their dogs were barking and stuff like that,” Ekeh said.

Ekeh said he later heard gunshots and saw officers providing aid to the victims.

“When that happened, there was a cop coming out,” Ekeh said. “He was dragging one of the ladies out trying to, you know, help her out and provide aid. And then the older lady was walking out. She was bleeding and stuff like that. And another cop was trying to give her aid.

KCRA 3’s Mike TeSelle was at Diablo and Lancelot drives and saw a large response from multiple agencies that include the sheriff’s office, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the California Highway Patrol and the Twin Rivers Unified School District Police Services—the scene is down the street from one of its schools; class is not in session.
