CANTON, New York (WWNY) – Two anonymous letters sent to local lawmakers raise concerns about the condition of Partridge Run Golf & Country Club, the village-owned course in Canton — but golfers who played there Wednesday say the criticism does not reflect what they experienced on the course.
What the letters claim
The letters, sent to local lawmakers, allege the greens are in poor condition, the rough is uncut, basic maintenance is being neglected and the pace of play is unacceptable.
One letter says the problems are hurting the course’s reputation. The other asks management to hire a qualified full-time golf course superintendent, implement a plan to restore conditions and mow the grass whenever weather permits, among other requests.
Golfers disagree
Rick Mace and a group of friends played a round at Partridge Run on Wednesday and disputed the letters’ characterizations.
“Canton is lucky to have 2 good 18-hole courses,” Mace said.
Mace said any issues described in the letters may no longer apply.
“They’re well-maintained now. At the time of the letter, there were some early-season spring issues or whatever, but not anymore,” Mace said.
Fellow golfer Tim Phalon also defended the course.
“It’s one of the best courses in the North Country, I believe,” Phalon said.
What comes next
A meeting is scheduled for July 21 for members to discuss the course’s current condition and ways to improve it.
The letters are expected to be a topic at the village’s board meeting Wednesday night. The mayor says he couldn’t comment on the matter until the board determines how to proceed.
