RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – One of the most endangered species on the planet is getting a new generation thanks to North Carolina conservation efforts.
The U.S. Center for Biological Diversity has announced that four litters of the endangered red wolf have been born in the wilds of North Carolina. The center works with the North Carolina Fish and Wildlife Service for the wolves’ conservation.
Twelve to sixteen pups are to have survived the first couple months of life. They are to remain where they are, in the wild or on private land thanks to conservation programs.
According to the center’s Red Wolf Recovery Program, the red wolf is the most endangered wolf species and only twenty-two adults remain in our state.
“It’s inspiring to see these underdogs making another incredible comeback,” said Will Harlan, Southeast director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “Red wolves are thriving in the wild thanks to the dedication of the Fish and Wildlife Service, landowners and communities working together. These pups provide real hope for the future of red wolves.”
The program believes the red wolves are making an impressive rebound with this new pack of pups.
