CHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Academy pitcher Kaiden McCarthy says “all of Vermont” has been behind him since the Atlanta Braves selected him in the MLB Draft this past Saturday in a deal worth over two million dollars.
The Braves picked the 17-year-old 48th overall in round two of the MLB draft.
Friends and family gathered at his Chester home to watch the moment. He spent the past few seasons as Vermont Academy’s ace, as well as throwing a few innings this summer with the Vermont Lake Monsters.
Now that he’s made history, McCarthy says he needs to keep pushing on for more milestones. “It’s awesome, pretty much all of Vermont is supporting me, and it’s super great; I couldn’t be more thankful for all of Vermont — small state — so I kind of gotta go out there, make history, show them what I’ve got and everything,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy is now one of two players from the state picked in the first five rounds — the Pirates picked former U-32 standout Owen Kellington in the 2021 fourth round.
