DUBLIN — Instead of an Ikea store, Dublin might be in line for a new Sutter Health medical complex, county documents show.
Sutter Bay Hospitals, a unit of Sutter Health, paid $57.5 million for 27 acres of land near the interchange of Interstate 580 and Hacienda Drive, according to documents filed on July 10 with the Alameda County Recorder’s Office.
“Sutter Health has a longstanding commitment to serving the Tri-Valley area,” a Sutter Health spokesperson said. “This latest investment in Dublin gives us the opportunity to thoughtfully evaluate how to best meet the evolving healthcare needs of residents as the community continues to grow.”
Ikea Property Inc. was the seller in the all-cash deal, according to county files.
For years, Ikea had pursued approval of a superstore at the site, which is near numerous subdivisions. The Dublin Planning Commission torpedoed the retailer’s plans for a new store in 2018 in the face of fierce neighborhood opposition.
Sutter Health has been in expansion mode in the Bay Area for several years now.
In 2024, the nonprofit health services organization revealed plans for an $800 million project that would create two new campuses in Santa Clara. It unveiled plans in 2025 for a 272-bed, ultramodern medical center at 2831 and 2841 Mission College Blvd.
In Emeryville, Sutter Health said it would create a new $1 billion medical campus in the vicinity of 53rd Street where it intersects with Hollis Street, Chiron Way and Horton Street.
In recent years, Sutter Health has also bought an office complex in Pleasanton and grabbed some empty land in Livermore.
