Sam Howell’s been the subject of some fierce criticism since the Washington Commanders traded him before the 2024 NFL Draft. But his first preseason outing for the Minnesota Vikings proved he’s still fighting for NFL relevancy.
Howell’s time in Minnesota got off to a rough start. Head coach Kevin O’Connell hitched his wagon to J.J. McCarthy this offseason, but the Vikings acquired the former North Carolina standout to be their backup. However, his struggles over training camp led some analysts to wonder whether the signal-caller would be a potential cut candidate this offseason.
This isn’t the first time Howell’s had his back against the wall. He was the most sacked quarterback in the league during his one season as a starter in Washington. He didn’t do enough to convince the Seattle Seahawks’ coaching staff he was a worthy replacement for Geno Smith. This represented a last-chance saloon scenario, but it brought a positive response.
Sam Howell turned in his best performance since Commanders’ departure last year
Once McCarthy took the early reps, it was Howell’s turn to take center stage in the Vikings’ preseason opener against the Houston Texans. He completed 84.61 percent of his passes for 105 yards. He didn’t throw a touchdown, but his 100.3 passer rating represents a huge step in the right direction.
This is a big plus for Howell, but nothing is guaranteed as yet. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer also caught the eye during his brief involvement, and Brett Rypien will also fancy his chances despite failing to meet expectations in this one.
A lot can change between now and when final cuts are due. However, this performance should alleviate any fears about Howell being made surplus to requirements. Complacency cannot creep into his approach, but considering everything he’s been through during a rollercoaster NFL journey so far, that shouldn’t become an issue.
Every Commanders fan wishes Howell well. Some felt he got dealt a bad hand by Ron Rivera, and they’d be right. But once the opportunity to select Jayden Daniels fell into their lap, his fate was only going in one direction.
Howell is still showing the correct resolve. He knows the high stakes attached moving forward, especially in a contract year. And who knows, perhaps learning from an expert mind like O’Connell in the coming months could provide the improvements needed to get another starting shot elsewhere.
Making the team was becoming increasingly doubtful, according to reports. But this performance suggests that Howell is not going to give up without a serious fight.
