A yearling bull moose that wandered into a gated area behind a business in Burley was safely captured and relocated Tuesday, July 14, after authorities received a report from Cassia County Dispatch.

The Magic Valley Regional Office responded to the call and, with assistance from the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office, Fish and Game wildlife staff tranquilized the moose, captured it and moved it to suitable habitat in the southern portion of the region.

Fish and Game officials said the Magic Valley Region receives multiple reports in late spring and summer of moose in and around Cassia County. Most sightings involve yearling moose that have recently been driven away by their mothers as they begin caring for this year’s calf. As the young moose disperse and establish their own home range, they can wander into agricultural areas, neighborhoods and along roadways.

Officials urged the public to give moose plenty of space and avoid approaching them. People should keep dogs close or on a leash because dogs can provoke a defensive response. While moose may appear slow and clumsy, officials warned they are powerful, surprisingly fast and may charge if they feel threatened.
