SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT) — A cute new addition was welcomed into the world at the Potawatomi Zoo earlier this week!
Raya, one of the zoo’s red pandas, gave birth to five cubs on Monday.
Zoo staff say because there were so many in the litter, the cubs were very small and ultimately only one survived.
The staff at the zoo are caring for the cub, currently known as “Big Red,” and are cautiously optimistic as he continues to grow.
Red pandas are listed as endangered, and experts estimate there are less than 10,000 in the wild.
