Manchester United new signing Benjamin Sesko will wear the No.30 shirt in his first season at Old Trafford.

The Slovenia international finalised a switch to United last week, joining the club for an initial fee of £66.4million from RB Leipzig. He has signed a five-year deal.

Sesko, who scored 21 goals in all competitions for Leipzig last season, was introduced to United’s supporters ahead of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Fiorentina at Old Trafford. He trained with his new teammates for the first time on Sunday.

United had prioritised the signing of a striker this summer and after failing in their attempts to sign Liam Delap and learning that Viktor Gyokeres wanted to join Arsenal, Sesko was identified as an alternative. He was on United’s radar back in 2022.

Ahead of the likelihood of him making his United debut against Arsenal on Sunday, Sesko has been handed the No.30 shirt, meaning he is maintaining a personal tradition. He wore that number throughout his time at Leipzig and at former club Red Bull Salzburg.

He becomes the first United player to wear the No.30 shirt since former goalkeeper Nathan Bishop occupied it for the 2022/23 season. Other previous occupants include Matteo Darmian, Ritchie De Laet and John O’Shea.

Outlining his ambitions for the season ahead, Sesko told club media: “Just that we get better, that we connect together, in general, and we, as a team, just try to grow, to grow together step by step because we’re getting better.

“We’re just even more complete and complete. It’s just a matter of time when we can fly high again.”

He added: “For me, the team is great. It is getting better and better and that’s why also there is just stuff that makes you come there, gives you this energy that you want to be part of.

“I think it’s a great project, in general, and I can’t wait to start, definitely.”
