CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Virginia Tech running back Marcellous Hawkins doesn’t have a lot to say about himself, even when he’s queried about his advanced stats, which were among the best in the country among running backs in 2025. However, his teammates and his head coach have plenty to say about him.

“If you were going to have a Frankenstein lab at the bottom of the Merryman Center and build a running back, that’s how the running back’s supposed to look,” Hokies head coach James Franklin said of Hawkins last week at ACC Football Kickoff.

At 5-foot-10, 223 pounds, he has a great build, and he showed flashes of his excellent ability in the open field last year.

Hawkins, a transfer from Division II Central Missouri, burst onto the scene in 2025 as Tech’s primary running back. He rushed for 749 yards on just 118 carries (6.3 average), but the advanced stats suggest he was capable of much bigger numbers had the Hokies been in more football games.
