WASHINGTON (WKRC) — A nationwide recall has been issued for certain bottles of generic allergy medication after the manufacturer said the tablets may be contaminated with another drug that could trigger life-threatening allergic reactions in some people.
Unique Pharmaceutical Laboratories has voluntarily recalled four lots of 5-milligram cetirizine hydrochloride tablets, a generic version of Zyrtec, because of possible cross-contamination with ranitidine, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA said the recalled medication was distributed nationwide by Rising Pharma Holdings Inc. in 100-count bottles.

Health officials warned that people who are allergic or hypersensitive to ingredients in ranitidine could experience severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face or throat, hives and loss of consciousness.
The issue was discovered after a pharmacy technician noticed red dots and discoloration on some tablets while filling a prescription.
No illnesses or adverse events related to the recall had been reported as of the FDA’s announcement.
