ROME, N.Y. — A bear was seen running across Turin Road in Rome near the intersection with Potter Road.
A local resident reported the animal ran in front of their car before heading into the Beeches area and then into a nearby development.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, 50-60% of the black bear population inhabits the Adirondack region, 30-35% in the Catskill region and 10-15% in the central-western region.
The DEC stated that transient bears are routinely encountered throughout the Mohawk Valley.
“Although black bears have a natural fear of humans, they can act or become defensive if surprised, approached, or become emboldened by human food sources,” according to the DEC.
