Cape Girardeau drivers react to rising gas prices

  • July 24, 2026

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – The ongoing escalation between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz is creating an increase in gas prices, and some Cape Girardeau drivers are feeling frustrated.

According to AAA, Missouri’s average for regular unleaded gas is $3.84/gallon; that’s 24 cents more than a week ago and about 98 cents higher than this time last year.

However, the report says that Cape Girardeau is one of the cheapest cities in Missouri to fill up on gas, with an average of $3.77/gallon.

Despite that information, Cape Girardeau drivers expressed their irritation with the rising prices.

“I just have a fit,” one driver said. “I can’t believe… I remember when gas prices were way down, but they went up so much.”

Another driver spoke about the fluctuation in gas prices.

“It’s like they go up, and then they go down and then they just shoot right back up to even more,” he said.

Despite the pain drivers feel at the pump, they say they don’t plan on traveling any less this summer.
