GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A potential acquisition involving two national broadcasting companies could have an impact on the West Michigan media market.

Nexstar Media Group, a national media company that owns WOOD-TV, is in talks to acquire Tegna Inc., a national media company that owns WZZM 13, according to a report from Reuters.

Reuters, citing an anonymous source, said a deal between Nexstar and Tegna “could be finalized soon, provided talks avoid last-minute obstacles.

“A potential deal between the two companies would mark a significant step in the ongoing consolidation of the U.S. television industry, as broadcasters adapt to shifting consumer habits driven by cord-cutting and the rapid expansion of streaming, amid expectations of looser regulations under U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration,” Reuters wrote.

Gary Weitman, executive vice president and chief communications officer at Nexstar, declined to comment on the potential acquisition and how, if it occurs, it would impact operations at WOOD and WZZM.

“Nexstar does not comment on rumor or speculation,” Weitman said in an email.

Officials with WZZM could not be reached for comment. A manager at WOOD referred questions to Weitman.

Nexstar “owns or partners with more than 200 stations across 116 markets,” Reuters reported. The company also “operates prominent media properties such as The CW and NewsNation, and has recently ramped up its focus on sports content,” Reuters reported.

“Tegna controls 64 stations and runs networks including True Crime Network,” Reuters wrote. “The company has a market valuation of about $2.42 billion, compared with Nexstar’s $5.56 billion, according to LSEG data.”

WZZM is Tegna’s only property in Michigan.
