Flau’jae Johnson hosts back-to-school giveaway in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. —
Savannah native and WNBA rookie Flau’jae Johnson hosted her fourth annual back-to-school giveaway this weekend at Enmarket Arena, offering free backpacks, school supplies, uniforms, braiding, and haircut services to local students.
“The kids need to see me out here,” Johnson said. “They need to see, like, dang, she grew up here. She made it out. [Then] she came back and trying to pour into us. That’s always the message I want to push.”
Thousands of students attended the event, which organizers said would be bigger than ever. Johnson expressed her gratitude to the community, saying, “I want to say thank you to everybody for coming out here. I really appreciate it, and every year we want to make it bigger and bigger. This is a great turnout.”
Speaking about her rookie season in the WNBA, Johnson shared her excitement for the second half, saying, “I’m going to go crazy, man. It’s going to be a great year. I’m trying to show y’all something special.” Reflecting on her first half of the season, she added, “I’m still that one. No matter the level.”
Currently averaging 13 points and five rebounds per game, Johnson recently achieved a career high, scoring 28 points about a month ago. Her contributions on and off the court continue to resonate with her hometown community.
