COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Maria DeFelice is a Columbia-native muralist who is primarily self-taught and has built her career from commissioned artwork to public murals, with experience that also includes five years working in Abu Dhabi. She says travel and culture influence her style through patterns, textures, and design details.
One featured mural on Sunset Blvd was created around a client’s passion for wildlife conservation, with Lady Justice included as a nod to the client’s work as an attorney and as a symbol of balance between people and nature. Maria says public art brings a city to life and that murals are both an investment for a business and a gift to everyone who passes by.
Her Walls Alive program focuses on bringing murals to schools with students involved from start to finish. At Rosewood Elementary on Rosewood, Maria worked with the school to create a mural celebrating the school’s 100th year, using student input for the design and having every student participate by adding handprints instead of signatures.
