LANSING, Mich. (WNEM) — Michigan House and Senate Democrats are announcing the reintroduction of nine bills that would lower costs and provide long-term relief for thousands across Michigan.
Sen. Chedrick Greene reintroduced Senate Bill 1134, which would expand pension options for Michigan’s corrections officers.
“Michigan workers deserve fair wages, competitive benefits, strong retirement options and my bill will help deliver on that promise,” Sen. Chedrick Greene said. “Our corrections officers work hard to keep our communities safe and by improving their retirement options, we can make a tough job a lot more secure and a lot more attractive.”
Senate Bill 1134 would allow corrections and other state law enforcement officers to become members of the Michigan State Police hybrid retirement system if they wish.
“Corrections officers take on some of the most challenging work in our state, and they deserve a system that recognizes their work and gives experienced professionals a reason to stay,” Rep. Amos O’Neal said. “By providing a pathway to retirement security for the public servants who keep our corrections system running every day, this policy will help create safer facilities and a justice system focused on rehabilitation.”
“Every day, Michigan’s corrections, conservation and other law enforcement officers show up to do some of hte most challenging and dangerous work on behalf of our state,” said Sen. John Cherry. “That’s why for years, I’ve been committed to ensuring they can reap the benefits of their hard labor by being able to retire and enjoy their golden years with financial security and peace of mind.”
The other bills reintroduced would lower health care costs for teachers, firefighters and other public sector workers.
“Our corrections officers, firefighters, police officers, teachers and other public employees have dedicated their lives to serving and protecting us, and this and the other bills introduced today show that me and my Senate Democratic colleagues continue to have their backs,” Sen. Greene said.
Senate Bill 1134 is identical to legislation from last term, which passed both chambers of the legislature with bipartisan support. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer vetoed the previous legislation on a technicality, according to Rep. O’Neal.
