The Los Angeles Sparks have floundered without Kelsey Plum in the lineup over the last month. LA is just 10-17 on the season and riding a six-game losing streak after losing a heartbreaker against New York. But that could all change now that Plum is finally close to returning from injury.
Plum was on the court participating in Thursday’s practice for the Sparks, per Justin Russo. This is the first time that Plum has been able to practice since suffering a left lower leg injury on June 21st.
This news come on the heels of rumors that Plum could be traded at the WNBA trade deadline.
Plum is arguably the hottest name on the trade block before the deadline. She is playing on a one-year, $999,999 contract and reportedly does not wish to re-sign with LA. That could make Plum a highly valuable one-year rental, or even a long-term piece for the right team.
It is rare for a player of Plum’s caliber to be available on the trade market. Plum was on a tear before her leg injury, averaging 23.9 points, 6.4 assists, and 2.2 rebounds per game through 12 outings. She could be an immediate starter on most WNBA teams and has enough star power to transform a fringe team into a contender.
The trade deadline is just a few days away, so Sparks fans should keep their eyes peeled throughout the weekend.
Next up for the Sparks is a road game against the Fire on August 2nd. That game tips off at 3:30PM ET from Moda Center in Portland.
It will be fascinating to see whether or not Plum is still a member of the Sparks for that contest.
