The Eagles signed Jalen Carter to a four-year extension just as training camp began. We learned that it was a $152 million deal, and now we know some more about how Howie Roseman structured things — and, you guessed it, utilized void years to cushion the cap.
According to Spotrac’s breakdown, Carter received $40.8 million guaranteed at signing. He also has five option bonuses, and the team added four void years to the deal. As usual, Roseman kept the salary cap in mind — and knowing he’s got some expensive cornerbacks to pay next year — kept the cap hits relatively low for the next few years.
ProFootball Talk also reported that the team included $250,000 in bonuses related to a weight check every year. In the report, PFT’s Mike Florio suggested that a “weight bonus” is not typically included in veteran contracts, but throughout the offseason, the coaches mentioned publicly their want for Carter to get in better shape, so it’s not entirely surprising.
All told, the deal looks like yet another win-win for the Eagles organization and for one of the league’s top defensive tackles who deserved a second contract.
