From Unboredroom, this month’s Get Involved spotlight nonprofit:
Unboredroom is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes the inclusion of people with and without disabilities through the arts and recreation to increase empathy, self-acceptance, and health outcomes. Founded by Artist and Recreation Therapist Rachel Cohen, MS, CTRS, as her social prescription for the loneliness epidemic, Unboredroom promotes recreation-based education and increases self-expression city-wide and beyond.
Inclusion Prom
Their largest event of the year, Inclusion Prom, is back for year three with a Y2K “Stick Together” theme that will have you believing the 2000s will be remembered as the era of inclusion. The event showcases DJs with and without disabilities and prioritizes disability accommodations like volume-adjustable silent disco headphones, certified ASL interpreters, braille signage and maps, sensory chill lounge, and more. The party boasts three rooms of adaptive art-making installations, a silent auction featuring local artists, sticker trading bar, sensory-sensitive glam station, photobooth, and surprises galore. Headlined by KUTX’s DJ Shani, this all-ages extravaganza is an experience you will never forget! Tickets here.
Unboredroom’s year-round programming includes collaborative art-making workshops and exhibitions, adaptive seasonal events like Friendsgiving, Pal-entine’s Day, the Pi Day Paddle, and community outreach like mobile sensory tents, classes, educational panels, and more. Their art studio is open every first Saturday from 1-4pm at Canopy on Springdale Rd.
