MICHIGAN — Planned Parenthood of Michigan (PPMI) says it’s permanently closing three of its health centers located in Lansing, Livonia, and Warren beginning Thursday.
The organization says it’s because of federal cuts including a more than $4.2 million decline in patient care reimbursement and family planning.
PPMI says they’re notifying affected patients and connecting them with continued care.
Patients will need to decide whether to continue their care virtually or drive to the next location nearest them, which depending on where they live that could vary between 10 and 70 miles.
“Like many healthcare systems nationwide, we are navigating a fundamentally changed federal funding landscape, alongside rising operational costs and shifting patient preferences,” Planned Parenthood said in a statement on their website. “Increasingly, our patients are choosing the flexibility, convenience, and privacy of virtual care.”
In May, PPMI warned that more of its clinics could close if they didn’t receive emergency funding from the state.
At the time, the healthcare system asked Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to approve $5 million in statewide funding. That money was never offered up.
“For decades, federal family planning funding and reimbursement for patient care helped Planned Parenthood expand access across the state,” Paula Thornton Greear, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Michigan said. “Republicans in Congress have nowdemonstratedthat they are willing to block Medicaid reimbursement for Planned Parenthood patients, and the Trump administration has proposedeliminatingthe Title X family planning program altogether. We cannot build the future of patient care on federal funding that can be stripped away whenever political power changes hands.”
Following the announcement of the health center closures, Whitmer released the following statement:
Today is yet another consequence of DC republicans’ historic attacks on reproductive freedom, health care access, and Medicaid. We’ve been clear about this since the passage of the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ last year: these devastating cuts would force key health care providers like Planned Parenthood to close doors and shutter services, cutting Michiganders off from the critical health care they need.
Planned Parenthood says they remain dedicated to serving their patients and will be looking to expand virtual care.
