With Gamescom around the corner, the PS Store’s latest sale promotes the upcoming exhibition, bringing down prices on lots of PS5 and PS4 games.

Alien: Isolation may have somewhat overstayed its welcome, but its nail-biting survival gameplay perfectly captures the claustrophobic tone of Ridley Scott’s iconic 1979 sci-fi movie. Assuming the role of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of series protagonist Ellen Ripley, you’re stalked from start-to-finish by the series’ deadly Xenomorph. Up against impossible odds, the game constantly keeps you on your toes, as you’re forced to slip past the enormous extraterrestrial unnoticed. It’s a completely unique experience that hasn’t really been replicated since.

Axiom Verge is PlayStation’s very own Metroid. That may sound a teensy bit degrading, but there’s no denying that this and Nintendo’s own space-faring adventure have more than a few things in common. Still, if being compared to one of the most beloved game series of all time isn’t a compliment, then we don’t know what is. If you’ve never seen the appeal of these types of games, then chances are this won’t change your mind. Devoted fans of the genre, however, will no doubt adore Tom Happ’s opus.

Blasphemous 2 takes the foundations of its well-received predecessor and builds upon it in all the right ways. The spiritual successor to FromSoftware’s supremely popular Dark Souls property, Bloodborne fuses the lip-smackingly satisfying combat of its predecessors with a frighteningly fast pace, resulting in the most intense action on the PS4. Harrowing Lovecraftian-like fiends and larger-than-life bosses vie for the attention of your Saw Blade, as the dingy districts of Yharnam intertwine. A steep difficulty curve can make this occasionally putrid escapade appear off-putting, but soldier through the skin and sinew and you’ll find a bloodbath worth submerging in.

Half interactive story, half cube-based puzzler, Catherine: Full Body is the expanded remaster of Atlus’ brilliantly weird take on love. You play as Vincent, a 32-year-old bachelor who can’t quite decide if he wants to commit to his long-term girlfriend. His potential infidelity gives way to suspiciously vivid nightmares where he’s forced to scramble up towers made of blocks, lest he wake up dead. It’s as mental as it sounds, but the tactile puzzles are addictive, and the storytelling is gripping at its best.

If you’re after a striking and unique puzzle game, Chants of Sennaar should be high on your list. With a focus on understanding and translating a series of fictional languages, you make progress in this game by piecing together the meaning of symbols and characters throughout the world. Remember Crash Bandicoot? The madcap marsupial makes a grand return on PS4 in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, a remake of his first three adventures. The games may be relatively old, but they’ve been brought up to modern standards with colourful graphics and updated gameplay. There’s lots of fun to be had across this trio of platformers, with hours and hours worth of tricky levels to run through.

A wonderful recreation of the PS1 original, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a real blast from the past. Drift boosting through beautifully rebuilt tracks in the generous Adventure mode or taking the racing online is a lot of fun. Much like the PS1 title it’s based on, this is an arcade racing game with tight controls, surprising difficulty, and lots to see and do. Despite some areas that could’ve done with modernising, this is probably just about the best kart racer on PS4.

Cursed to Golf is a very different take on the sport, but its novel approach and charming presentation makes it stand out. It’s a side-scrolling, roguelike game in which you’re trying to escape golfing purgatory by, well, playing golf. As well as choosing the right club and finding the right trajectory, you have access to special abilities to help you overcome each maze-like level and all their hazards. It’s a simple, fun new spin on golf games that’s worth a shot.

While so many interactive dramas cheat, Detroit: Become Human is the most adaptable narrative ever conceived. Lead characters can die in the opening hours of the story, and that’s the last you’ll see of them for the remainder of the campaign. The robotic revolution plotline can be a bit heavy-handed, but as with all Quantic Dream games, there are some real high-points that will stick with you long after the credits roll.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided had a lot to live up to following up the hit series revival, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and it almost managed it. While it doesn’t quite measure up in terms of its narrative, the immersive sim is still a strong sci-fi adventure with fantastic environments to explore and flexible gameplay the series is known for. While stealth is largely the way to go, you’re given ample opportunities to go about objectives your own way.

The resurrection of a real role-playing classic, the aptly named Diablo 2: Resurrected is an expansive remaster of Blizzard’s 2000 title. While this is still very much the Diablo 2 from over two decades ago at its core, Resurrected does bring some welcome quality of life updates to the table, and the ability to jump between the original and revamped visual styles is a nice feature. All in all, the gameplay’s a bit wonky by today’s standards, but that old school atmosphere is hard to beat.

After a long time in development, Blizzard’s beloved action RPG series returns in grand style with Diablo 4.
